Principal Violist of the Colombia National Symphony Orchestra Raúl García is the winner of theGeorgina Lucy Grosvenor Memorial Viola Prize at the Yale School of Music for excellence in performance in 2010. Colombian Violist Raúl García has established himself as one of the most promising artists of his generation. Mr García holds a Magna Cum Laude Bachelor´s Degree in Music from Juan N.Corpas University; Master of Music and Artist Diploma degrees from the prestigious Yale School of Music holding the Georgina Grosvenor Scholarship. He later continued his Doctorate studies at Rutgers University where he was trained by Philadelphia Orchestra Principal Violist Choong-Jin Chang. His main teachers include Anibal Dos Santos, Jesse Levine, Toby Appel, Ettore Causa and The Tokyo String Quartet.
Mr. García has concertized at the most prestigious concert halls in his native country and abroad including the Luis Angel Arango Music Library, Teatro Colón, Carnegie Hall, Sapporo Concert Hall Kitara, Merkin Concert Hall, the Leonard Bernstein Memorial Stage, the National Arts Centre, and the Lincoln Center. Mr Garcia has collaborated with artists such as Ani Kavafian, Gary Hoffman, Andrés Díaz, Chee Yun Kim, Donald Weilerstein, David Shifrin, Ettore Causa, Gilbert Kalish, y miembros del Tokyo y Julliard String Quartets, among others.
A passionate chamber music and solo performer García has appeared at The St. Lawrence Quartet Chamber Music Seminar, Innsbrook Institute, Zukerman´s Artist Program, the Pacific Music Festival, Yellow Barn, the Perlman Music Program, the Menuhin Music Festival, Pro Música, and the Esmeraldas International Music Festival.
Recent recording projects include a CD for NAXOS titled ‘’Tango Distinto’’ with music of Astor Piazzola; along with trombone player Achilles Liarmakopoulos; as well as a collaboration with compositor Andy Akiho in his Album “No one to know one’’.
Mr García serves on the viola faculties of Fundación Universitaria Juan N. Corpas and
Universidad Central in Bogotá. He is regularly invited to give master classes at important music conservatories, such as the Boston Conservatory at Berklee college of Music.
Raúl plays a contemporary violas made by Sergio Peresson (1979).
